Strength Standards… or Life Standards?

Scroll the internet long enough and you’ll find endless “strength standards.”You should squat this. Deadlift that. Bench a certain number based on your body weight.
But here’s the problem… most of these numbers are made up—and even when they aren’t, they’re often taken out of context.
They don’t account for your age. They don’t consider your injury history. They don’t factor in your goals.
And most importantly… they don’t reflect your life.
Because for most people—especially the golfers we work with—strength isn’t about hitting arbitrary numbers. It’s about capability.
Can you move without pain? Can you play 18 holes and still feel good after? Can you bend down, rotate, carry, and enjoy your day without hesitation?
That’s the real standard.
Strength should support your life, not compete with it.
Now, that doesn’t mean numbers don’t matter at all. Getting stronger absolutely helps—especially as we age. But the goal isn’t chasing someone else’s benchmark… it’s building your version of strength.
The kind that keeps you on the course. The kind that protects your body. The kind that lets you say “yes” to the things you enjoy.
So instead of asking, “How much should I lift?”Start asking, “What do I want my body to be able to do?”
That’s where real progress begins.
