Is Your Metabolism Really Slow?

One of the most common things people say when struggling to lose weight is:

“My metabolism is just slow.”

And while it’s true that some people naturally have a slower metabolism than others, in many cases the issue isn’t actually metabolism at all — it’s awareness of calorie intake.

As shown in the video example, the woman genuinely believed she was eating a relatively small amount of food. But once her intake was properly tracked, she was consuming nearly double the calories she thought she was eating.

This is extremely common.

Research consistently shows that people tend to underestimate their food intake, sometimes by as much as 40–50%. Not because they’re lying or intentionally hiding food, but because it’s surprisingly easy to overlook small snacks, drinks, and bites while cooking, or underestimate portion sizes throughout the day.

A handful of chips here. A flavoured coffee there. A few bites off someone else’s plate.

It all adds up.

So before assuming you have a “slow metabolism,” it may be worth taking a step back and honestly assessing your daily intake. Even tracking your food carefully for just a few days can be incredibly eye-opening.

The goal isn’t guilt or blame.

The goal is clarity.

Because once you truly understand what’s going on, you can make informed changes that actually lead to progress. Real transformation starts with honest awareness — not punishment, not extremes, and not excuses.
